My expectations entering this course were to learn something new about a subject that I did not really know that much about. I learned a lot about not only Medical Humanities, but the literature standpoint of it. I realized that medical workers have an even tougher job than I thought. It is more than knowing how to treat different symptoms and knowing different cures to diseases. If a nurse does not treat their patients with the care and attention they well deserve, then they somewhat fail at their job. Having empathy towards a patient shows that you care tremendously about them. Patients will let it all out to you on what they are going through, how they are feeling, and how hard it is to cope with their illness. My expectations for the course were met and I would recommend any and every student to take this course because it would give them different views on a lot of things.
The elements and work of the course that I enjoyed were the many different readings we read that were not all the same but different. Some English classes I had the opportunity of taking often had the same content in each reading, but this class was different. I enjoyed actually taking the quizzes over the reading on Socrative because it lets us corporate technology in the classroom. I did not expect these things at all in this course. The course was very educational and shared a light on many new things that I had yet to experience in my college career.
The overview of the course could be summed up in one word, empathy. We used this word the whole semester and it is a powerful word in Medical Humanities. We read many readings throughout the course that showed empathy such as “The Fifth White Coat," "The Distant Moon," and "Technology and Medicine.” These readings all connect with one another for the fact that they all deal with empathy. The medical worker in each reading shows how they care for their patients and have empathy for them but do not want anything to take away the empathy they have in their heart and become an uncaring doctor who treats their profession as a job and not a career, meaning that they do not show much care for the patient and are just there for a paycheck instead of treating it as a career and being able to relate to and care for each and every patient.
This course can be used by myself both academically and personally. Academically, I can use this course as a guide on how I should treat all my classes. This course helped me realize how every class I take in college is very important, even if it has nothing to do with my major. Personally, I can use this course to help me be able to communicate with people and show compassion for people in my life that is not only sick, but who are going through the ups and downs in their life. I can be there for them through hard times and care for them more than I ever did before.
