These poems are a component of a larger project on the author's experience with lupus and are based on the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and acceptance.

"Not Me"
They got my lab work mixed up.
They contanminated my samples.
They ran the wrong test.
They didn't know how to work the machine.
They got the patients mixed up.
The read the results wrong.
I am not that sick.
"Angry"
Filled with rage!
Furious with my body,
Annoyed, why me?
"Lost"
I am a dying leaf on a tree.
When the wind blows that will be the end.
No direction, no destination, just gone
I watch the world pass me by.
My words scattered by the wind.
Cobwebs have filled my thoughts.
Gray clouds swaddle me in darkness.
The stars have disappeared from the night sky.
Where am I?
"Please"
I ask every day
To take the pain away.
I promise all sorts of things,
I feel like a puppet on a string.
Hey! Do you hear me?
Down here! Do you see?
Of all the things, I'd say I'd do
Nothing changes, nothing is new.
I look up to the sky,
And keep asking you why?
Why don't you take it away?
All I do is pray and pray.
I will do anything for you.
I will always be true.
Please, please help me.
I'll be what you want me to be.
"Found"
We all have a burden
Ouor own cross to bear.
We can wallow in the sadness
Or brush it off and grow.
I have learned to love deeper,
To see beauty in everything,
To laugh at life,
To eat dessert first.
There are no rules,
Just a set of guidelines.
My life is mine,
Watch out here I come.
I am not a superheor,
Just an every day girl.
The one lesson I have learned,
Just live day to day.
